Longtime Marvel Entertainment Chairman Ike Perlmutter gets laid off

Marvel shakes things up with Chairman Ike Perlmutter being let go.

The New York Times has reported Marvel Entertainment Chairman Ike Perlmutter has been fired. This news comes days after it was announced Disney layoffs would begin across the company. This news shouldn’t come as a huge shock as Kevin Feige has slowly gained control from Perlmutter in regard to movies and television. Perlmutter was a huge factor in helping sell Marvel to Disney, though, and helped create what Marvel is today.

The NYT also revealed Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment, will remain and report to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, so there are no big shake-ups there.

Perlmutter was mostly in charge of the comics side of Marvel Entertainment in recent years, managing what the NYT reports as $40 million to $60 million in sales annually. Given Disney made around $83 billion in total revenue in 2022.

The question now remains, how will this affect Marvel Comics going forward, if at all? Given Perlmutter’s removal of certain responsibilities, maybe not at all.

Regardless, it’s a massive news day for Marvel Comics fans, with Perlmutter removed and news of Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti’s G.O.D.S. shaking the entire mythology up.
