‘The Flash’ #798 introduces Wally West’s new son Wade

‘The Flash’ #798 starts an adventure with Wally’s new baby in grave danger.

Jeremy Adams’ The Flash has been a godsend to fans. It has embraced the family element of the character, brought big epic adventures, and even introduced new heroes. The Flash #798 begins a new adventure that spans space and time but also puts Wally’s newborn baby in danger. Yep, the stakes are very high, but as we see in today’s issue, it’s nothing Mr. Terrific can’t help with.

The Flash #798 opens with Wally, his wife, and the kids all looking upon their new family member, Wade. After a few pages of soaking it in, Wally is off helping Mr. Terrific on an important matter. It’s a big sci-fi machine with some nonsense science ideas thrown about, but as usual for superheroes, things turn bad fast. That goes double for Wally, who has a new problem to solve but also gets his new son kidnapped.

If you like your comics with crazy cosmic storytelling, you’ll dig where this issue goes. The sci-fi adventure takes some big swings as we learn what’s at stake and what these heroes must do. Plus, Adams stuffs a Star Trek reference in there that should please nerds like me. The fact that Adams gets an iconic character from his run to pop up in the cliffhanger is icing on the cake.

However, things get a little too expository when an iconic DC hero pops up. There’s a lot to get through to set things up, and unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of pages to get through it all. That includes a surprising smash cut of Wally’s wife seemingly terribly hurt and then awake and pointing fingers with a few bandages. You get the sense there had to be some expediency due to the milestone issue coming up in two issues.

Art is shared between Fernando Pasarin and Oclair Albert, and Will Robson. Pasarin’s style is obvious and he draws most of the book, with a brief few pages near the end by Robson. If you’ve enjoyed Pasarin’s work in previous issues in this run, you’ll love it here. The detailed, thinner pencil look is very good at capturing details and every ripple of a muscle in the superhero costumes.

The Flash #798 sets up a new adventure for Wally and his amazing friends to go on while also putting his new baby in danger. The stakes are high and the different heroes popping in mix things up for an exciting final adventure under Adams’ guidance.

Some great family moments to start the issue
Some fan-favorite characters, and newer ones too, pop in
The big sci-fi scope of the story is cool
Forced to jarringly cut ahead in time and explain a lot
