‘Q’ review: Personal documentary about spiritualism and family

Q is a personal documentary about faith and spirituality that recently screened at Tribeca Festival. Filmmaker Jude Chehab spends time with her mother Hiba to learn more about her devotion to an all-female religious order  she is a part of. But as Chehab becomes more determined to learn about the group, an emotional rupture develops within the family.

Though the film is quiet and filled with retrospection, it is teeming with emotion. Doubt, fear, and trepidation co-mingle with love, family, and loyalty. Q is an interesting mix that is consistently engaging. All the while it is telling a story that focuses on a family that still feels wide ranging.

It is a sensitive and complicated combination that Chehab is able to deftly navigate through. There is a sense of compassion that permeates Q and prevents it from ever feeling exploitative. There is a lot for Chehab to unpack – the ties to the mysterious group goes back generations – but is never overwhelming. If anything, it adds to the up close and personal feel of things.

The intimate nature of Q is enhanced by the beautiful camerawork. Chehab mixes in archival footage to fully develop her life at home. The music also does a good job adding to the feeling, but it can feel overpowering at times. By the end, it feels like Chehab has invited audiences into her home. The secretive Qubaysiat have had a strong effect on Chehab’s family, but their bond remains strong. They all share a deeper understanding of each other. Those watching will feel the same way.
