Hell Hath No Fury is a premise straight out of the wacky 1990s. The dark comedy screening at the Chattanooga Film Festival focuses on one December night in the Iives of Priscilla (Leah N.H. Philpott, Country Gold) and her husband Silas (Jacob Ryan Snovel, Climate of the Hunter). Priscilla has plans to kill the man she wed, but Silas has his own ideas.
The performances are exaggerated and over the top as Philpott and Snovel are playing to the back rows. This adds to the wacky quality of Hell Hath No Fury. Philpott is especially delightful in a role that is evil, manipulative, and funny. It also adds the the ridiculous nature of the plot.
Adding to the over the top nature is the use of sound effects. Sounding like something from Looney Tunes, they are outlandish and the perfect choice. The fact that the movie is genuinely funny adds to the enjoyment. Hell Hath No Fury uses running jokes and visual gags to keep its humor fresh.
Hell Hath No Fury ends up being a two person show. Not only is the majority of the time spent with Priscilla and Silas, their over the top performances overshadow the rest of the cast. It sounds like a bad thing, but it is just part of the charm.
The Chattanooga Film Festival takes place June 23 – 29
