‘Nocterra: Nemesis Special’ #1 is an engaging interlude

A spectacular tie-in event that builds towards an epic conclusion.

The penultimate chapter of the story “No Brakes” is an essential special issue of the series. In Nocterra: Nemesis Special, readers can get a deep look into the battle we’ve all known is coming: Emory and Bill. With the help of guest artist Liam Sharp, Scott Snyder delivers the most terrifying issue of the world of Noctera thus far. This interlude is a very engaging story that captivates the audience with masterful storytelling and phenomenal art.

The issue opens by setting the stage for the primary conflict of the story. With Emory working to keep Blacktop Bill from discovering where the Sundog Convoy is heading, Bill seems to be an unrelenting force of nature. Blacktop Bill has always had a sinister tone, and that is nicely complemented by Emory’s determination to come out on top. This makes for a great story that may be some of Scott Snyder’s best storytelling yet. With everything seemingly on the line in this issue, every page works to show how dire of a situation this is. Snyder has written horror stories before, and this issue shows how skillful he is at the genre. With every page building off the last, making for a thrilling read.

Liam Sharp is the perfect artist for this issue. Blacktop Bill has become a force of nature more than a physical adversary at this point. Throughout the issue, his presence creeps across every page like a growing vine. Sharp has developed a truly haunting art style that is a great combination of psychedelic and lifelike. While characters seem all too real, environments are captivating through their ominous aura. This is further complemented by the coloring in this issue, which helps to make a grainy art style more compelling to read. Overall, the art makes for a visually stunning story that is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Nocterra: Nemesis Special is a spectacular read that sets everything in place for the final chapter of this story. With only one issue left in this arc, there’s a lot that Nemesis Special succeeds in doing to lay the groundwork for what seems to be an epic conclusion to “No Brakes”. Not only does it deliver a battle that many have expected for a long time, but it delivers one that lives up to the stakes built around it. Furthermore, this issue is a blast to read from start to finish.
