‘Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman’ #2 says something about Diana while scaring you

Wonder Woman’s worst nightmare is…different horrible versions of herself!

Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #1 has put Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark in quite a pickle as they’re stuck in a maze and Wonder Woman is fighting…herself! That story wraps up today in Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #2, and Josie Campbell continues to show a strong sense of who Diana is, while Juan Ferreyra will give you new nightmares. It’s a great addition to the Knight Terrors tie-ins.

As the cover shows, Wonder Woman is fighting a monstrous version of herself, but instead of being physically stronger, the beast is psychologically stronger. Or at least, it’s trying to wear Diana down throughout this issue. To do this, Campbell and Ferreyra show us different forms of Wonder Woman that are literal nightmare visions of who she could or might be.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

It’s a clever way to extrapolate who Wonder Woman is as we know she’s not any of these visions, be it a war-loving beast or a god who demands total power. As you see these nightmares, you begin to imagine Wonder Woman fearing the worst parts of her are the only parts and thus can see the hero within. As these visions wear Wonder Woman down, you realize this isn’t a fight that can be won by punching but by her resolve and inner strength. It’s so very Wonder Woman in how she gains an edge and eventually escapes the nightmare.

Meanwhile, Ferreyra draws some truly freaky beasts. A giant snake Diana slides out of is just one of many impressively detailed and imagined visuals. Monsters with impossibly large jaws protruding from their faces and monsters with eyes in the wrong place litter the last quarter of the issue. In the first two visions of a monstrous Wonder Woman, Ferreyra utilizes a double-page layout that mirrors each other in design, helping convey the different kinds of monsters Wonder Woman doesn’t want to become. It’s a clever visual idea he pulls off well.

Although this two-part tie-in was billed as a Justice League Dark book, it’s really not, as seen by the fact that once Wonder Woman is freed, it glosses over the other heroes getting their freedom. Chalk that up to a limited page count, but it makes you want more from them since they helped start the story in the last issue.

Truly nightmarish, Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #2 cleverly shows us Wonder Woman’s greatest fear is becoming monstrous herself in different ways. This helps us see Diana for who she truly is as she fights against the last things she’d want to become.
