‘Bootyology’ review: Enter the Bootyverse

Grand theft booty.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Bootyology is a mockumentary about a documentary crew looking to explore the relationship between artificial intelligence and music. During filming, they find out about a mysterious rap group known as The Booty Boys. This sends them on a search to find the group that disappeared over a decade ago.

The film opens hot with a series of laugh out loud moments. Between clips of Booty Boys performances and interviews, Bootyology is a constant stream of jokes. A lot of it is low hanging fruit – they are a couple of white rappers that sing exclusively about butts, after all – but the hit/miss ratio is impressive.

In a surprising moment, first act ends with the crew finding the pair. It seems like Bootyology is going to be a mystery, but that is resolved in about half an hour.  After such a great start, it is only natural to wonder, “Now what?” While there is a drop off, Bootyology is still funny. A Cribslike segment has some great one liners and watching brownEye (Chris Lightbody) and sixxxhole (Spencer Yaras) attempt a comeback is a lot of fun. The ending feels rushed and a segment about togetherness after an awesome music video feels out of place.

Still, the story of The Booty Boys is a refreshing change of pace. There are not many films that offer the kind of nonsensical entertainment found in Bootyology. The soundtrack is amazing and the characters are wacky fun. By the end, you will find yourself wanting to leave this world for the bootyverse.

Bootology backs up on VOD August 22
