This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.
The investigation on Only Murders in the Building is in full gear. On the previous episode, the gang close in on their first real suspect, but hit a dead end. However, after Charles makes an unplanned proposal to his girlfriend, they may have stumbled upon a potential killer.
After Charles and Joy’s engagement, love is definitely in the air for all three leads. The most engaging couple of the bunch continues to be Oliver and Loretta. Their first date is awkward, wholesome, and totally endearing. Martin Short and Meryl Streep have so much chemistry together that you really feel they were meant to be. They act with the youthful energy of high school sweethearts and it’s difficult to not fall for their charms.
On Only Murders in the Building more ridiculous side is Charles second guessing his upcoming wedding. To be honest, it does seem to be moving a bit too fast with them already sampling wedding cakes. What better person to help Charles sort out his issues than his old stunt double, Sazz Pataki. Jane Lynch’s previous experience as a game show host is on display as her character quizzes Charles on his feelings towards his fiancé.
It’s an interesting exploration into his mind and thinking that is silly and insightful. You feel sympathy for the man who has been alone for a large portion of his life and who doesn’t think he deserves to be loved. When he finally comes to terms with his true feelings, his candor with Joy only places him into the dog house and jeopardizes the relationship.
Then there’s Mabel and Tobert. Things are heating up between the two since Mabel doesn’t have her usual partners to investigate Ben Glenroy’s murder all the time. It doesn’t do the pairing any favors to run parallel to Oliver and Loretta. By comparison, this romance doesn’t stack up nor does it have the same fire. At least their stakeout provides a level of efficiency raising two more people of interest.
The ending of this episode of Only Murders in the Building hits harder than the other previous cliffhangers. There are real stakes considering their closeness to one of the leads, and unlike other suspects, it’s believable they could be involved. Whether they are the killer or not, the reveal raises intriguing questions regarding their connection to the deceased. “Ah, Love” marks the first time this season where I’m anxious for what comes next.
With love as one of the episode’s main themes, the adorable romance between Oliver and Loretta stands out. But it’s the cliffhanger ending that will have you waiting in anticipation for next week.
New episodes of Only Murders in the Building are released Tuesdays on Hulu.
