‘Moon Knight Annual 2023’ #1 mixes things up with different takes on each hero

The Contest of Chaos continues in ‘Moon Knight Annual 2023’ #1!

Agatha Harkness’ Contest of Chaos continues this week in Moon Knight Annual 2023, and she has new challengers fighting to determine who will join her side. This time, it’s Moon Knight vs. Tiger Division’s Taegukgi. Does a street-level hero like Moon Knight stand a chance against a hero who basically has all the powers of Superman? Many reasons point to no!

Written by Jed MacKay with art by Creees Lee, this issue plays around with the format a bit to showcase both heroes in different lights. A fight comic at its roots, Lee keeps you entertained as they battle, while MacKay makes it logical for them to fight for more than a few seconds.

Those different lights are thanks to the chaos magic and a Chaos Zone the two heroes are fighting within. MacKay gives us different takes on both heroes with interesting costume designs by Lee. It’s a neat way to mix things up and keep the creativity flowing. That’s tough for a fight comic, but I think MacKay largely succeeds.

There’s also a logical and psychologically sound ending to the battle. It’s a touch disappointing if you’re expecting a definitive answer as to who would win in the fight, but MacKay wraps it up nicely from Moon Knight’s perspective. Given how much the issue reminds us Moon Knight is largely outpowered, it’s a suitable answer to who would win, I suppose.

This series does fall prey to typical fight-comic style book problems; for example, the larger story isn’t touched upon, and your interest may vary depending on the characters. I still don’t know what Agatha is up to, and she continues to barely be in these one-shot stories.

If you like to see heroes fighting heroes, you’ll enjoy Moon Knight Annual #1. MacKay and Lee add a nice additional layer of creativity as we get to see different looks and interpretations of both heroes in the process. That said, this event continues to be paper thin as we wait for answers and a reason to care about Agatha’s plans.
