‘Titans’ #3 review

Are the Titans right about investigating the former Church of Blood and their reform?

Now that the Knight Terrors are over, things are back to business with the Titans, and they pick up right where they were, investigating the Church of Blood and their sudden reform. Last issue revealed that Brother Blood and the Church of Blood have rebranded as Brother Eternity and the Church of Eternity, respectfully, but the Titans are not buying it. To add more faith to the claim, Tempest has become a church member, and this news is not sitting well with the Titans. On top of all that, the Flash is supposed to die, so how will Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott weave all those points together?

The opener is terrific in presenting the Titans’ concerns with the Church. I like that the Titans are not hiding this mistrust and will unquestioningly accept the reform, but instead need to investigate what is truly happening within the Church’s building. The break-in features Beast Boy’s power set very nicely, but I wondered how he could separate into multiple beings. For example, how can he become numerous beings when he becomes a cluster of bees? This ability should be interesting to explore, making for some fun comic book panels. The break-in is a great scene that allows for some enjoyable moments with Nightwing and Beast Boy before things hit the fan.

Once things do hit the fan, there is where the action is, and Nicola Scott delivers. Some awesome action scenes showcase individuals and a team dynamic. One of the full-page spreads is a fantastic team shot and should hopefully one day become a poster or maybe a reprint cover for this issue; fingers crossed. Annette Kwok brings colors that electrify the art. Kwok’s greens make Beast Boy and Starfire’s eyes pop on the page. Especially the color set used for the Boom Tube scene, it feels like that page could glow in the dark.

Tom Taylor does a solid job with the pacing for this story arc. Issue #1 had the team assembling and Flash’s mystery, issue #2 gives us the reform and shock member of the Church, and in this issue, Taylor peels back just enough to provide us with a twist that will have you back for part four. The setup is very enjoyable and helps to add to the mystery of the reform claim while still keeping you guessing. There are enough plot points to keep things exciting and entertaining that you might feel satisfied with the Church, but you’ll want to know about the Flash and the new item discovered. This series has terrific pacing that helps make it work to keep buying the monthly issues when stories are in arcs for collected editions.

Titans #3 showcases that the team is not just action stars, but they are also investigators. They will have a tough time figuring out why the Flash will die, if the Church of Blood has reformed, and what made Tempest join the Church. Action, drama, and mystery abound as Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott tag team as a creative force that shows why the Titans are the premier DC super team.

The mysteries are aplenty and entertaining with the Church of Blood, Tempest, and the Flash
Nicola Scott draws up some amazing pages and scenes that Annette Kwok brings to life with electric color that helps to pop the power sets and uniqueness of characters
Tom Taylor handles the team dynamics excellently giving time to shine for most and reveals his plots at a pace that makes each issue worthwhile
Carries the story forward, but does rely on the rest of the arc as this is "a piece of the puzzle"
