Haunted houses have been around for over a century. They eventually evolved to Halloween attractions at theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios. Spooktacular! is a documentary that looks at Spooky World, the Halloween-themed amusement park and its long lasting influences and sudden demise.
One of the major themes of the film is how important marketing and promotions were for the park. This included an entire section of the park created by special effects master Tom Savini – who served as executive producer for Spooktacular! – and having horror icons come and sign autographs. Spooky World had big names behind it, but it all had a DIY feel.
This grounded atmosphere does lead to an odd detour. Workplace romances are hardly uncommon, so it seems misguided for Spooktacular! to spend so much time on them. The stories are fun and add flavor, but it often feels like the time would have been better spent on a different topic.

Interviews with Robert Englund and Linda Blair almost serve as a stamp of approval. There is genuine affection when they talk about Spooky World. Along with footage from the time, Spooktacular! is able to convey a strong sense of nostalgia. When the downfall of the park is discussed, it is disappointing and frustrating.
The major obstacle for most documentaries is appearing to a mass audience. Ironically, this was one of the goals of Spooky World. The idea was to bring in hardcore horror fans and families looking to have a good scare. This may be why filmmaker Quin Monahan includes the more salacious details. Spooktacular! ends up being an interesting watch that is a hell of a ride.
