‘Only Murders in the Building’ season 3 episode 10 review: Flashy spectacle on stage and catching a killer behind the curtain

It’s “Opening Night” for Death Rattle on Only Murders in the Building.

We have finally reached the season three finale of Only Murders in the Building. Our trio of Mabel, Charles, and Oliver have been investigating the murder of actor Ben Glenroy, and narrowed down the suspects to a single killer. In “Opening Night,” we learn if their hunch is correct.

The recurring theme of mothers and sons is prominent in the episode and provides much of the emotional punch. It’s such a touching moment when Loretta reveals the truth to Dickie. The tears of joy in each other’s face and the understanding between them without saying much words makes for a moving official reunion.

As heavy is the relationship between the producers Donna and Cliff. Up to this point they were used for comedy with their awkward kisses. However, since Only Murders in the Building started pointing the finger at Donna, things have taken a dramatic turn. In such a short time, the series makes her a sympathetic figure who is protecting her kid. You have to be a monster to deny her only request of watching the opening night of Cliff’s first produced musical before turning herself in.

Death Rattle itself is a spectacle that only Oliver could create. We have received glimpses into the musical numbers, but you don’t receive the full experience until everyone is on stage in costume. There is such a grander feel during the performances. In “Creature of the Night” there are actors dressed as crabs and other sea critters, but my eye always falls on Charles and his sparkly and bright blue constable uniform.

Plotwise, Only Murders in the Building still manages to throw in some unsuspecting twists. They help give Oliver his shining moment on stage and play to his self-serving nature. Others make tying up the mystery a little less straight forward, and highlight Mabel’s sleuthing skills and attention to detail. A lot of the focus has revolved on what happened in the theater, but it’s at the Arconia where Glenroy died. The exploration into the events at the apartment building is where the real breakthrough occurs, and it’s interesting to finally see what happened during the night in question.

The finale wraps things up nicely, and finds practical and maybe too convenient ways to write off some of the guest stars. And, like in previous seasons, it sets up the next murder the team will solve. There is an interesting and more personal feel considering the intended victim, but it isn’t able to match the shock from season two due to Paul Rudd’s surprise cameo. I hoped they would have gone bigger than last season so there’s some disappointment.

Overall, “Opening Night” brings a satisfying conclusion to the season’s murder mystery while throwing in some unexpected twists. And, like the cast and crew of the Death Rattle, the viewer is just as in awe and entertained to see the musical finally on stage.

The recurring theme of what mothers will do for their sons provides a moving emotional punch.
After spending the entire season behind the scenes, it's so rewarding and entertaning to see the full production of Death Rattle.
The cliffhanger for next season's mystery doesn't live up to the high expectations set by season two.
