There could be many benefits for any unaffiliated alien race to join the United Federation of Planets. On Star Trek: Lower Decks, the Ferengi express their interest and are ready to negotiate their entry. While the adults in the room hash out the details, the gang hit the town to experience the nightlife and write entries for a travel guide of Ferenginar.
All season long the series has explored themes of growth and maturity and it continues with Mariner. She finally comes to the realization of her self-sabotaging ways and inability to be happy. Her actions are in contrast to her local Ferengi friend who, although he humors her, has managed to leave the partying days behind him. It’s nice to see the character progress and acknowledge the strong support system she has. Mariner takes the steps forward she needs to break her cycle of promotions and demotions.
Star Trek: Lower Decks also takes the Rutherford and Tendi relationship to some awkward places thanks to them pretending to be a married couple. The usually in sync best friends suddenly bungle their way through the day as they are placed in situations that become more intimate. There’s no denying the chemistry between the characters and the affection they share, however if they were ever to become more than friends, it will occur organically. Not under any forced conditions because that would sour the moment.
The episode also peels back the curtain behind Ferengi culture and plays with their capitalistic ways. It plays well with the humor whether if it’s seeing their regular television programming or visiting the public library, the series dives into their deceitful and transaction centric ways. It’s also nice fan service to bring back Max Grodénchik’s Rom from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as the Grand Nagus. You can’t help but laugh at his mischievous methods in pulling one over on Starfleet or the obliviousness of the main negotiator. But true to form, Nog also shows that he can be an honorable man as well.
“Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place” is a riotous trip to Ferenginar that provides the outlandish backdrop to allow our favorite lower deckers to explore themselves and their relationships.
