‘Doctor Strange’ #9 spooks things up

As the pace slowly speeds up, the cliffhanger leaves readers ready for an epic conclusion.

While Doctor Strange has made his final move against General Strange by making a deal with the Trinity of the Ashes to help assure victory, things are never that simple. Meanwhile, it seems that Wong is preparing W.A.N.D. to enter the fray in a last-ditch effort. And throughout all of this, what is Clea Strange up to? Although Doctor Strange #9 has a lot of action going on, it’s filled with high intensity which makes for an exciting issue. Just after Halloween, Jed MacKay and Pasqual Ferry deliver a story filled with magic, wonder, and a whole lot of Strange.

A lot is going on in this issue, but it’s done in a way that builds up through proper pacing and exciting action. MacKay has weaved an intricate web throughout the series so far, and everything is falling into place at the right time. W.A.N.D. has been in the corners of the series since its relaunch, maintaining a steady amount of Wong and Co. that supports the bigger magical world in the Marvel Universe. In this issue, their role, albeit limited, sets the stage for the conclusion of this arc. Although it may be a little cheesy, it’s a practical course of action that abruptly ends the issue a little abruptly. Additionally, the battle of the Stranges is every bit as haunted as it was built up to be. The turn of events from their battle shows how well both are evenly matched against each other. This fight has been built up for several issues and pays off rather well.

The art in this issue is some of the best so far. Pasqual Ferry delivers one of the best issues so far with a variety of panel layouts and sequences. Heather Moore uses a kaleidoscope of colors throughout the issue to further elevate the story’s intensity. The second page is a stellar example of how the pair are a dynamic duo of their own for the industry. While Ferry draws in a very expressive style, Moore fills the story in with a blending of bright hues and dark tones. Furthermore, the story once again is beautifully made and is an absolute joy to see.
