‘Everyone Will Burn’ review: The end is nigh

Dealing in excess.

Everyone Will Burn is constantly dealing in excess. María Jose (Macarena Gomez) has lost the will to live and is about to end it all before a young girl named Lucia (Sofia Garcia) enters her life. When the residents of her village begin to die horrific deaths, Maria Jose is accused of summoning a generations old evil.

The shocking opening will immediately pull audiences in. Not only is it a powerful moment, but it also sets the stage for a number of themes that will be covered throughout Everyone Will Burn. Paranoia, superstition, religion, and the lengths people will go to maintain their peace are all explored. This also lends to a sense of unease that is felt the whole time.

Director David Hebrero (who is also one of the writers) tackles some heavy ideas without forsaking the straight up horror. From the creepy mood to the excellent camerawork, this is a scary movie. Everyone Will Burn may not have the in your face scares of some genre offerings, but the strong characters and backstories will keep audiences interested.

The pacing does not hold up as well, however. There are way too many lulls and things can feel repetitive at times. Even stranger, in a movie filled with legends about the end times and human sacrifice, things can still feel overly dramatic. These scenes are almost like something out of a soap opera. This along with some odd music choices feel out of place.

The attempts at humor work much better. Everyone Will Burn has some funny moments that take the edge off. Some parts come dangerously close to being too campy, but there is plenty here to chuckle about. This is no small feat considering how dark the story can get.

When there is so much going on in a story, it is hard to have a strong ending. That definitely is not a problem here as the finale is arguably the best part of Everyone Will Burn. The story culminates in a chaotic conclusion that will leave anyone watching satisfied.

Everyone Will Burn comes to theaters December 1
