‘Loop Track’ review: Creepy thriller builds to great ending

Something’s following us.

Loop Track is a psychological thriller that works hard to keep the audience guessing. Ian (Thomas Sainsbury, who also wrote and directed the film) is out for more than just a hike. He seems to want to get away from the world. When Ian comes across other hikers, he begins to believe the group are being stalked. He soon begins to question his own sanity.

The methodical pace allows for the characters to be fully explored. Their motivations and personalities are central to building the tightly drawn atmosphere and ever present suspense. Loop Track takes a bit to get moving, but once everyone is introduced, it becomes an engaging watch.

Characters are an important part of most films that rely on exposition and setting. Strong performances from Sainsbury and Hayden Weal (Dead) ensure anyone watching will remain invested. Weal plays Nicky, the overeager hiker Ian meets while he is trying to avoid a couple who are also on the trail. The pair have great chemistry – unsurprising as they previously worked together on the underrated Dead – and their banter is a highlight of Loop Track.

The mystery is the main hook of the plot and comes from a number of different sources. There is the obvious question of who or what may be following them. But as Loop Track escalates, Ian continues to make outrageous claims. It reaches the point where no one can be trusted.

Loop Track is a smartly written thriller that builds to a great reveal. It does a great job of surprising the audience without having to resort to nonsense. There are clues along the way that some viewers will pick up on, but it all makes the bonkers final act that much better.

Loop Track comes to VOD and Digital December 1
