Jam-packed with everything that makes comic events fun.

In the second issue of Titans: Beast World, Tom Taylor and Ivan Reis continue an epic story of action, adventure, and heartbreak. After writing Nightwing and Titans for a while, Tom Taylor once again reminds readers of his skill in high-level stories. With a shocking cliffhanger, this issue takes the high stakes of the event began with and raises them further.

The story begins where we left off: Beast Boy lost to the Titans, and the world has been turned upside down. This issue has a lot going on at once, but it pulls it off rather successfully. With the not-Justice League and Titans in space trying to take control of the situation, Nightwing and Batman are some of the few left to defend Earth. Something small that goes a long way is Taylor has Bruce and Dick defending Bludhaven, rather than Gotham City. It’s a small detail, but a nice reminder of where Nightwing’s home is. As the story progresses, we balance between learning about Nightwing’s next challenge while also learning more about Amanda Waller’s devious intentions. If anything, Taylor has surely cemented Waller as a perfect modern antagonist for the Titans, one who hopefully continues to play a role in the future.

Artist Ivan Reis partners with colorist Danny Miki for this issue, and the two don’t hold back whatsoever. Reis spectacularly illustrates the story, bringing a huge amount of raw anguish, vivid action, and horrifying turmoil which helps to both bring the story to life and make it feel like a comic that just can’t be put down. This couldn’t be done without the help of Miki, whose electric colors pop on every panel. A perfect example of this is on the final page of the story. With a dark background and vibrant foreground, the issue ends on a truly beautiful cliffhanger.

As a whole, Titans: Beast World is a whirlwind of an issue. Its debut issue set up the Titans with their first global catastrophe, and in this issue, we see how they rally in the face of adversity. Additionally, this story offers insight into what dangers lurk in the shadows, and those dangers seem to be closing in on the Titans. Furthermore, Titans: Beast World #2 is another spectacular issue in an interesting event.
