‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ episode 6 review: Big group drama unfolds in both timelines

Selfish lies have great repercussions on the most recent Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

After departing the Alaskan Monarch facility, our main trio of Cate, Kentaro, and May continue their pursuit of the missing Hiroshi Randa. They return to Cate’s hometown of San Francisco and discover a lead. This week on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, we continue the search in the modern day, but not before returning to the past to follow a younger Shaw.

The past timeline is an intimate dive into the group dynamic. During a party to schmooze with the higher ups, Shaw and Keiko turn a stuffy party into a surprising first date. We witness how far the pair have come from the initial misunderstanding back in the premiere to this point. The playful hand holding at the end of the night is a sweet touch. However, feelings can make things messy as well, and it leads to the group’s first real pushback from the government and strife within their ranks.

But how successful could their relationship have been when Keiko has another love. Nothing is more important to her than her job. The excitement and enthusiasm she approaches learning more about the titans is a real joy to watch. Anders Holm’s Bill is the amusing third wheel who inadvertently breaks up the fun before it can get started on the night of the party. But he is aware enough of the growing interests between the two. The episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters does show little moments between Bill and Keiko foreshadowing how they end up together, particularly through their shared passion for science.

The present isn’t devoid of drama either, and Shaw is once again at the center of it. He catches up with the Randa kids plus May with his newly acquired henchwoman, Agent Duvall. The Shaw of now is a sharp contrast to his younger version. Here, he’s more calculating, bitter, and unapologetic. The years in forced retirement, and maybe his missed opportunity with Keiko that we just witnessed, shaped this world-weary version. It’s ironic that the people taking the brunt of his actions are his one love’s grandchildren.

The most significant reveal in the episode revolves around Hiroshi. Though we receive one answer to one of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ mysteries, it opens up even more intriguing questions. The scene hits on several levels from the superb special effects and MonsterVerse cameo to an emotional short-lived reunion that only plays more mind games for Cate and Kentaro. Almost lost amongst it all is May’s startling admission rocking the group dynamic. It’s a parallel to Shaw’s situation from the past where a selfish act has lasting repercussions.

“Terrifying Miracles” shakes up the group dynamics of both timelines while building to a conclusion filled with action, emotion, and intrigue.

Carefully balances different elements from a love story to kaiju to family drama.
Provides an answer to a major plotpoint while opening up even more intriguing questions.
Shaw's turn in the present is a bit rushed.
