‘Jay Garrick: The Flash’ #3 reveals Dr. Elemental’s identity

As Judy Garrick adjusts to modern living, memories from her past surface that just might haunt her father even more.

Jeremy Adams, Diego Olortegui, and Luis Guerrero deliver one of the best comic issues of the New Golden Age with Jay Garrick: The Flash #3. Previous issues have shown the original Justice Society of America working together and then zip to modern times as Judy Garrick explores her new life. This issue continues that combo perfectly, and with the upcoming changes to the main Justice Society series, this issue is strong proof that this creative team would be the next best choice to keep the Society moving forward.

Jeremy Adams does an excellent job of making a balance between the time periods and the characters. His scenes are fun, and no one feels reduced to eye candy on the page. The opening starts back in 1941, showcasing original Society members perfectly as they face the evils of Nazi science. In that short segment, those characters get moments that showcase their abilities and bits of personality; they feel relevant and worthwhile in this modern set of stories, making me want more of their adventures. Plus, this is a great scene that helps to spotlight why Dr. Elemental is a threat to worry about.

Diego Olortegui and Luis Guerrero continue the issue’s hype with their art. Together, these two give us adventure from the Golden Age to the Modern Age. The team presents both eras in such a way that they feel timeless and respectful of their surroundings yet blend perfectly, not distracting the reader from the story’s use of time change. Olortegui draws the characters in dynamic action, especially when you see Judy Garrick in action. His art credits her as being a hero before her return/introduction. Guerrero has such a mastery of hues that his colors make the book feel hopeful in both periods, and the energy pops wonderfully off his Flashes.

The last half of the issue was the best, as it plays the modern characters off each other with such outstanding balance and connection. Star Girl, Mister Terrific, his son Fairplay, and Quiz Kid, another Time Lost Child, all make appearances. They all serve a great purpose, too. Adams plays with Mister Terrific and Jay’s relationship, bonding them as fathers who have reunited with their children. Seeing Fairplay and Quiz Kid get character in this issue helps to expand the Terrific family legacy and shows potential for these new kid heroes.

Jay Garrick: The Flash #3
DC Comics

Overall, with the great cast of characters and heroic action across time, we still get down to discovering the identity of Dr. Elemental. This reveal is where I find myself torn with the issue. The character has a connection with Jay Garrick that goes back to Flash Comics #1, but there might also be some closeness to Rival. Yet, this creative team has piqued my interest, and I’m excited to see where Dr. Elemental has been hiding and his plans. This miniseries has been such a fun, hopeful series that captures the fun spirit of comics, so start telling your friends to come along before this adventure ends.

Jay Garrick: The Flash #3 is an awesome adventure that moves across ages of comics from Golden to Modern. We are treated to some great guest stars that make for fun pairings of heroes which all leads to the secret identity of Dr. Elemental. Check your back issues because this character has been there from the start. Just what are their plans for the end?

Jeremy Adams plays these characters so wonderfullty
Diego Olortegui and Luis Guerrero are killing it with the art
Jay Garrick gets some wonderful character that shows he can be more than a part of a superhero group, he is rising to being a family man hero
Bringing in the Terrifics was such a fun scene and helps to connect this book to JSA
While I appreciate adding to Jay Garrick's rogues, this connection is very similar to Rival
