Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

This week is an indie takeover, as none of the top five books come from the Big Two.

Welcome to a Valentine’s Day edition of Fantastic Five, where we shout out the very best comics of the week! This week is an indie takeover, as none of the top five books come from the Big Two. Let’s get to the reviews!

#5: Parliament of Rooks #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

Harding’s monochrome art continues to be the highlight of Parliament of Rooks. It maintains a visually consistent aesthetic despite the book somewhat meshing numerous genres, ranging from horror fantasy, Gothic romance and even kaiju cinema. From the panels of a monstrous Darius in silhouette, to the red-colored splash pages of two giant rooks clashing each other in the air, Harding presents one of the scariest and visually dazzling comic books currently on the shelf.

#4: Zawa + The Belly of the Beast #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

The penultimate issue of Zawa + The Belly of the Beast satisfies in several ways, setting up a showdown that should be intriguing. How can our heroes stop a monster they only just met? The stakes are high, and Dialynas has set up a can’t-miss finale.

#3: The Displaced #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

It’s a process that makes me want to stay for as long as possible, and acts as a reminder of the real value of home: somewhere to unpack your true self alongside a family (found or otherwise) as the world tries to take it all away. If this is just the start, I can’t wait to see what this book really builds as it further unpacks its many objects and artifacts.

#2: Transformers #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

Another fantastic issue, all around. It certainly feels like we’ve settled into a proper groove for this opening story, and are certainly nearing the climax and establishment of whatever this book’s status quo may end up being. You don’t bring out the big guns (literally) like this if you’re not gearing up for something big. I’m really looking forward to what’s cooking for next issue and beyond, and I fully expect my expectations to be completely and totally flipped on their head once again.

#1: The Deviant #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 14, 2024

The Deviant #4 is a great chapter in a series written with deftness and rendered with great care. The Deviant continues to be a great character study that plunges us into the darkness of the human soul.
