‘Frogman’ review: Found footage movie focuses on little known cryptid

America’s scariest town mascot?

Though not as widely known on a national basis as other cryptids, the Loveland frogman has gone on to become the city’s official mascot. Still, there are not too many movies about the creature. Frogman is a found footage film about a young man named Dallas (Nathan Tymoshuk) who managed to get a picture of the titular creature while on vacation. This leads to a lifelong quest to prove what he saw was true.

There is a familiarity that quickly sets in. Locals share stories about the legend and there is a gritty feel to it all. But Frogman is more than a series of found footage tropes. For starters, there is actually some depth to its lead characters. This is very much a movie about friendship. The interactions between the three leads showcase a connection that is almost never found in the subgenre.

Frogman is not afraid to dive headlong into the horror elements. Plenty of Bigfoot hunter releases – both real and fiction – rely on shaky cam and things that go bump in the night. There is certainly some of that here, but the inclusion of Lovecraftian elements makes it stand out. Some fun revelations and its unique subject matter make it a fun found footage entry.

Frogman comes to VOD/Digital March 8
