EXCLUSIVE Ahoy Preview: Project: Cryptid #7

In a new preview, Joseph Illidge, Jamal Igle, and Juan Castro take us to the mean streets of Brooklyn, where the birds are not what they seem.

Courtesy of AHOY Comics, AIPT can share preview pages for the upcoming Project: Cryptid #7. If you’re an avid reader of AIPT, you know we’ve covered cryptids quite a bit thanks to our science section, including a special focus on Project: Cryptid #3 and a preview of #5.

Out March 20th, Project: Crytpid #7 features two stories, one of which is a story by Jamal Igle and Joseph P. Illidge you won’t want to miss.

In a horror story tapping into Illidge’s Jamaican-American heritage, he told us all about how it’s a personal tale, “…which is really about childhood fears and how they linger under the skin of our psyche well into adulthood. When AHOY Comics editor Sarah Litt told me Jamal Igle was drawing the story, that made my whole week. We’ve known each other through most of our careers, and Jamal is one of the best and most detail-oriented storytellers in comics. Our story ‘John Crow’ takes place in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and Jamal nailed the look perfectly. Juan Castro’s inks sealed the deal, and AHOY’s decision to print the story in black and white is a testament to their outside-the-box thinking as a publisher with books like Project: Cryptid.”

Igle added, “I’ve made a career out of depicting the fantastic, telling stories of Gods and Monsters, of Heroes and Villains. When you spend decades dreaming of the spectacular, the opportunity to draw a story like ‘John Crow’ is rare, but welcomed. Particularly when you finally get to work with a friend, as I have with Joe Illidge. Joe and I have had parallel career paths for years. We’ve known each other since the early days of both of our respective careers, and while he’s been my editor in the past, this is the first time we’ve collaborated as writer and artist. While steeped in the fantastic, ‘John Crow’ draws on Island heritage, and is also a visual love letter to the real Brooklyn. A version of Brooklyn you only know if you live here.”
