‘Riddle of Fire’ review: Strange coming of age story perfectly captures childhood

Riddle of Fire is a stylish coming of age story that doubles as a modern day fairy tale. Hazel (Charlie Stover), Alice (Phoebe Ferro), and Jodie (Skyler Peters) just want to eat some snacks and play video games. Unfortunately, their mother has locked the television with a password. She offers to give them the code if the trio can get her favorite blueberry pie. This seemingly simple request leads to an adventure the group will never forget.

Even before speckled eggs, witches, and a dance scene become involved, it is clear this is going to be a silly movie. As Riddle of Fire progresses it leans into these wackier moments. It does have a tendency to overdo it, but these aspects also do a great job of capturing the whimsical nature of childhood. Everything is magical fun or a daunting challenge. Each accomplishment is a life-changing moment. There is a joy that similar stories have trouble conveying.

Riddle of Fire traffics in nostalgia. The grainy 16mm look is perfect for the story being told. The audience is instantly transported to a different time and place. This is very important since the plot sometimes falters. Some parts feel disjointed and there are moments that move things along, but leave little other impact.

This is offset by the strong performances of the three main characters. Even when things get too goofy or nonsensical, the siblings hold Riddle of Fire together. There is a depth to each one that will keep audiences engaged. The majority of the runtime is spent with the kids and writer-director Weston Razooli does an excellent job of making sure it is time well spent.

There is a charm to Riddle of Fire that is not often seen in these types of films. Instead of dealing with the angst and turmoil of growing up, the movie focuses on the adventure and joy. It has its flaws, but it is an overall enjoyable watch.
