‘Resident Alien’ season 3 episode 7 review: Resolving huge daddy (and mommy) issues

Harry’s kid is back looking to cause trouble on Resident Alien.

Harry is in a dark place on Resident Alien. He is still trying to cope with losing the love of his life, Heather the Blue Avian. When it rains, it pours since we learn his very own child, Bridget, is looking to kill him

“Here Comes My Baby” is an interesting exploration of the parent child relationship and how many of the characters are affected by their own familial bonds. Out in the forefront is Harry and Bridget. It’s a comical rivalry where Bridget knows exactly where to strike to inflict the most damage. However, it addresses serious issues of abandonment and involves a bizarre action packed sequence as the pair take out their aggressions. Bridget’s shape shifting abilities leads to fun cameos, but more importantly, there is a tender heart-to-heart moment between the two. The love for a child fills the void lost from a romantic partner.

Resident Alien’s parent child themes continue with Asta and D’Arcy. For the former, there is the double shot of not only Jay, but the reappearance of her opportunistic biological mother. This demonstrates how complicated parenthood is, and not everything will have a Hollywood ending. Meanwhile D’Arcy’s own run in with her father is the spark to finally lead her on her spiritual journey of higher meaning and carrying out her destiny.

It’s nice how the common thread of parents and children runs throughout the episode helping interconnect the various narratives. However, the resolution is so swift and abrupt it takes away from some of the conflicts, especially considering the level of estrangement. It feels forced, and if we didn’t like the characters so much, it would be harder to believe.

It’s not all fun and forgiving hugs on Resident Alien. Kate Hawthorne finally comes to the ugly truth of alien abductions. The slow play and Meredith Garretson’s unhinged performance accentuates the unnerving feeling when she realizes the Greys existence. The series also zigs when you expect it to zag when trying to protect her from the pain. But it all feels consistent to Harry’s growth and changed perspective as a father.

The episode also creates the aura of an epic showdown for the season finale. As if you needed another reason to despise the Greys other than trying to take over our planet, their treatment of Kate should only add fuel to the fire. With all the other characters reappearing, even if some are a quick cameo, it’s as if the show is bringing all the gang back together to confront the threat. There’s even an early skirmish with Liv and Sheriff Mike and the hybrid Joseph. Add in the closing moments with one of Patience’s own on a martyr like mission, next week can’t come soon enough.

Also, the music choice is top notch for the episode. You can’t have people resolving their daddy issues, especially in hand-to-hand combat, without some “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Then, the use of a Talking Heads banger sets a playful, twisted, but totally appropriate tone to cap it all off.

“Here Comes My Baby” uses the overarching theme of the parent child relationship to cleverly interweave and interconnect the various characters’ stories, though the resolutions can feel forced and too swift at times.

New episodes of Resident Alien air Wednesday nights on Syfy.

Harry's complicated relationship with his child is childish, funny, and moving.
Hyping up the stakes, scale, and excitement for the season finale.
Nice selection of music hits to compliment the scenes.
Most of the resolutions between parent and child happen so quickly that if feels forced, considering the levels of estrangement.
