‘Wolverine’ #46 raises the stakes

Can Wolverine escape mind control to kill Sabretooth?!

The “Sabretooth War” continues this week, and Wolverine is way in over his head. Or maybe it’s more apt to say he’s lost it, as Kid Omega has been used as a weapon to trick Wolverine into thinking he’s back on an old mission with Sabretooth. Can he escape Sabretooth’s clutches, or are the Exiles, along with Wolverine’s closest friends and family, doomed?

Wolverine #46 is a delightful chapter in the story, revealing what is real and what isn’t side by side. The issue opens with Sabretooth on the left side speaking in a mean way, while on the right, he’s talking like they’re on a real mission together. On the left is the real world, and on the right is a different location entirely thanks to Kid Omega’s powers augmenting reality. It’s a cool way to show the “good times” these two had, while in the present, Sabretooth is as evil as ever, hatching his plan.

Kid Omega continues to delight. He’s a disembodied head, but he’s still got a lot of spunk and attitude. He adds good commentary on the relationship between Wolverine and Sabretooth. This allows him to comment on these two being like brothers at one point but no longer.

There’s also a fun, adventure vibe to this story, which is not unlike Indiana Jones. Sabretooth and Wolverine must go through extreme tests and pass through boobytraps as they go deeper into Krakoa.

'Wolverine' #46 review

Neat idea to show what is real and what Wolverine sees.

The stakes are as high as ever in part because the Exiles are nearly dying from Orchis Sentinels. They’re on their way to Krakoa to kill Sabretooth for good, but it isn’t easy, even with superpowered mutants on board. A key mutant will die by the end of the issue, further cementing the finality of this story arc. If you’re wondering why Wolverine is wearing an all-adamantium suit in solicits this issue will explain that. Again, the stakes are super high, which is key as the story still has four issues to go.

All the while, Laura is still trapped on the Sabretooth Home Base. The creepy headless Sabretooth characters have got her trapped, but she’s too clever for them. Luckily, she can also take a lot of violent hits.

Wolverine #46 builds up its stakes while using a clever cross-cutting effect to show the complicated relationship between Sabretooth and Wolverine. This is a great action adventure.
