‘Deadpool’ #1 will please fans new and old

Deadpool gets a new #1, a Symbiote dog, and a possible new lease on being a better dad.

Deadpool is kicking off with a new creative team and a new #1 issue this week as Marvel ramps up for a Deadpool-tastic summer. Spinning out of the great work Alyssa Wong did, writer Cody Ziglar is taking Deadpool’s pet Symbiote with him – along with a bunch of break-up baggage. It’s an extra-sized issue that gives and gives some more.

Deadpool #1 opens with the Merc with a Mouth taking a rest in a jumbo jet before jumping out with his trusty Symbiote dog. They’re on a mission, and we soon learn that it’s largely to help Deadpool cheer up. Nothing like more money to cheer up a mercenary. Right off the bat, it’s clear that the dynamic between Symbiote and Deadpool is strong. It’s almost like a father-and-son relationship, right down to Deadpool being concerned for his pup and the Symbiote looking to Deadpool for guidance. By the end of the issue, it’s clear fatherhood is going to be a big part of this story arc, which will please longtime fans.

Ziglar is quite good at capturing Deadpool’s emotional side through captions. He may crack wise, but it’s clear he does so to protect himself when he’s down. Or if his torso is blown in half. Same difference for a super healing dude like Wade Wilson. You always feel like you’re right there with Deadpool through thick and thin.

Much of this issue is one long action sequence that spins into a chase and then a twist with a new villain thrown in for extra fun. Rogê Antônio does some impressive stuff with layouts, like a double-page layout of Deadpool zig-zagging through portals. Extra points for Ziglar breaking the fourth wall with Deadpool’s dialogue. Antônio is also great at drawing the Symbiote. The giant wolf form it takes has a lot of emotion and is also a foreboding figure. The portal effects are also great, thanks to colors by GURU-eFX.

There’s also a quick backup or epilogue at the end of the issue promising more of Deadpool the dad going forward. The scene is three pages long but paced oddly, so it could have probably been a maximum of three pages.

Deadpool #1 is a nice change of pace as the sad sack that is Wade Wilson is trying to mend things with his trusty Symbiote doggo and a desire to make things right in his life. Fans of the previous run will love Ziglar picking up where that left off, with a promise for more development with Deadpool’s daughter. With plenty of action, this will appear to fans, both new and old. This will be a strong contender for best #1 issue of the year due to pace and emotionality.

A strong start with a fast paced issue that feels like it has extra content
Nice nods to past Deadpool elements while also spinning directly out of the last arc
Strong art, especially the Symbiote dog and some cool layout choices
The backup feels too slow and could have been one page max
