‘Immortal Thor’ #9 sets up a compelling meta story

Thor faces three classic villains and a comic book threat…literally.

Immortal Thor has been a breath of fresh air as it explores not only who Thor is, but what. Meta and genre-bending, Thor is about to embark on his greatest adventure yet: Comics! That’s right, Marvel has already tipped off readers that Roxxon Thor is coming, but in Immortal Thor #9, we find out how his transformation begins.

Immortal Thor #9 opens with where we left off. Thor is storming the Roxxon offices and wants answers. He’s coming away from a battle with Gaea who wants to kill the Earth and it seems Thor thinks punching Agger right in the jaw. As we learn in this issue, Thor may have bit off more than he can chew.

Al Ewing continues to explore what it means to be a superhero in a long-running comic in this issue. Previous issues have toyed with the old way Thor speaks and the history behind him, but here we see the comic history of Thor is being weaponized. There’s actually some sound logic in how it’s pulled off. No, it’s not breaking the fourth wall into our own reality, but playing with in canon comics.

Two classic Thor characters pop up in this issue. The first is Skurge, who has a serious bone to pick with Thor. His might is great and he pummels him quite a bit. Enchantress is the other, who also happens to grace the cover. Combined, these classics are taking it to Thor in a new way thanks to Agger’s edge. This issue further shows the stakes are high even for a character who is more powerful than ever. That’s tough to do, and Ewing is pulling it off in a creative way.

Themes of corporate greed are present along with Thor’s bullheaded nature. The danger Thor is under is more prevalent thanks to knowing he’ll pummel his way through a problem rather than resolve it with his brains. The character-defining quality Ewing tends to bring isn’t obvious yet, but he’s about to go through the wringer in a new way. At this stage, I think we’re all in it for the ride, but it’s too early to know what it all means. At this stage, this issue is mostly a fight comic.

The art by Ibraim Roberson is excellent with tons of detail and a great sense of drama throughout. In one of the final pages, Roberson reduces the panels thinner and thinner drawing your eye down just as Thor’s eyes look down at the comic put in his hands. There’s a few instances of the gutters taking up much of the panels as if Thor isn’t in reality at all but some white spaced world. A smart choice for a tale that’s bending his perception of reality.

Immortal Thor #9 continues to explore Thor’s identity in unique ways. To think a comic book could be Thor’s downfall when he’s as powerful as ever is exciting. This issue also continues to tug at Thor mainstays as Ewing explores the character like no other before.
