‘Green Lantern’ #10 review

Get ready to discover how the Resistance Corps stands against the United Planets.

Jeremy Adams and Xermanico took Hal Jordan to Oa last issue, and now we get to explore how some of the other Green Lanterns have formed a resistance to the United Planets. Adams has been building up quite the “space arm of the law” with the United Planets, watching various ring wielders across the universe. Adams has been dropping information in previous issues about the destruction of various Central Power Batteries of the Emotional Spectrum, so how will Hal deal with the United Planets? Adams also teams up with Kevin Maguire to give us part one of a three-part backup featuring Guy Gardner and Lobo.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

In our preview, Hal works with other Green Lanterns who did not stay with the United Planets, which is a great setup that interests me in how this Resistance Corps keeps up. With this volume of Green Lantern, I appreciate how Jeremy Adams plays with elements from the previous volume, making this quite enjoyable with power displays and the characters apprehended by the United Planets. The United Planets is becoming quite the threat, and with them replacing the Green Lantern Corps, it is making for a scary changing of power and vast levels of corruption. Adams plays the Resistance Corps as a great device to explain to Hal and readers how they can get the information they have. Even though Hal seems to be the star of this series, Jo takes a leadership role as she seems to be at the front of the resistance, which looks excellent on her.

Xermanico and Amancay Nahuelpan, with colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr, show us an incredible story about the Resistance Corps being very sneaky since they can’t use their powers. If the rings are used, the Ring Hunters will come for them, so the art team had to rise to that challenge of giving us pages with the heroes and not using their rings. They nailed it, as this forced everyone to be creative; a fun example shows how the exhaust vents are great substitutes for flying. Of course, the characters’ heroism can’t be on the sidelines too long, and when the team sees one of their own about to be experimented on, the rings are back to full power, which gives the art team a chance to let the light shine brightly! The story ends with quite a splash page, which makes me want more now.

Luckily, there is a quick backup featuring Guy Gardner within that wait time for the next installment. The backup is a swift, hilarious adventure that plays with Wrestling Across the Multiverse from Adams’ time on Flash; treat yourself and check out The Flash #787. Having Kevin Maguire come play on these pages is perfect as it shows readers what Guy has been up to since the United Planets take over and promises to give us another installment on the Guy/Lobo showdown. It has a different story style but connects very nicely to what is happening in Green Lantern. It has also gained my interest in the House of Brainiac story happening in other parts of the DC Universe. It’s a great way to end the issue and shows the solid strength of Jeremy Adams’ attention to character voice.

When Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, Kevin Maguire, and the Green Lantern Corps are together, you know you’re getting an excellent issue of entertainment. Watching Hal, Jo, and the Resistance Corps stealthily move around enemy territory forces the heroes to be more than just their rings against the corrupt United Planets as the Emotional Spectrum and Source Energy mystery looms in the background. Seeing Guy get in the ring to bring in Lobo sets up a comedic adventure that dives into the absurdity of the DCU.

Wrestling Across the Multiverse is back and this time they have Lobo and Kevin Maguire to give us the perfect expressions of '80s/'90s WWE
Xermanico, Nahuelpan, and Fajardo Jr showcase their ninja skills by maneuvering GLs across Oa without rings, but the second half lets the action loose
Adams does a wonderful job giving voice and personality to the cast of GLs that come from Earth, justifying their positions and balancing off each other
Various Lantern character moments in the issue elevating the newer GLs to positions that show the GL Legacy is in great hands
