Green Lantern #9 is a massive shock as you learn about the current Green Lantern ring Hal Jordan is using. Jeremy Adams has been adding some wild new elements to the Green Lantern mythology with this new series; for example, the United Planets and their “Green” Lanterns can shift color appearances with their rings. We have also seen the other lanterns of the Emotional Spectrum lose their Central Power Batteries. With this issue, Adams and artist Xermanico enable Hal to go to the stars and take the fight to the United Planets, but what secrets does the new ring hold?
Last issue, Hal Jordan got advice from Madame Xanadu about tracking the power back to where it was in high flux, and as you can see from our preview, the story takes us back to Spain. The journey to the source is a fun set of pages that allow Xermanico and colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. to cut loose, and they bewilder the eye. The landscapes and colors are so brilliant and beautiful that I hope this location becomes a place for the GLs to visit often. The area reveals a long-missed character from Hal Jordan’s past and ties into their past abilities. A much-welcomed appearance and quite the bombshell dropped about the power source hidden on Earth and the new ring, a lovely design. It is a fantastic layer that enables the story to progress and begs to be a story in the future of this series.
For the second story in the issue, we get to catch up with Jessica Cruz by writer Sam Humphries, artist Yasmin Flores Montanez, and colorist Alex Guimaraes. I have to say that the art team blended very nicely together, and the expressiveness on the characters’ faces reminded me of Kevin Maguire’s style. I like how they add a layer to Jessica’s personality, which helps make her unique among the other Earth Green Lanterns. Jessica shows herself to be very cunning and able to infiltrate, which gets her in close with the United Planets. This new layer is great as it showcases how much Jessica has grown since her first appearance. I like the connections to Jo Mullein in this issue, which will help tie this all together and advance the Earth Lanterns against the United Planets.
Adams and the guest writers have been doing a great job giving stories about Hal and the other Earth Lanterns that have them tied together. Since we have seen Jo behind the scenes, I am very excited to see what will happen when she and Hal start plotting with the new power source. This new direction of the Lanterns vs the United Planets gives me vibes of the GCPD when they were in No Man’s Land, which is very exciting to see the heroes with their backs against the wall, trying to fight for what is right. It’s a fascinating era for Green Lantern, and I can’t wait to see what will happen now that we’re off Earth.
Green Lantern #9 keeps building momentum with the reveals as Jeremy Adams and Xermanico team up to deepen Green Lantern’s mythology. Lots of changes are happening here. This is the start of a new era for GL, and it is not too late to jump on, charge up, and experience comics in a bold light! Pick this issue up, as this is a milestone moment in Hal Jordan’s life.
