The Essentials graphic novel is now available on Kickstarter, and today, we’ve got an exclusive look at the project! It was crafted by Luke Arnold and Doc Wyatt via The Lab Press, a new publishing outfit that focuses primarily on graphic novels. The project enlists a large group of comics artists, including Bill Sienkiewicz (who does the cover), Dani, Jason Howard, Andrea Mutti, and Glenn Fabry.
It’s a story in which “the world you see around you is not real.” It follows a disgraced mathematician named Harris Pax and Buttons (an “interdimensional being possessing his niece’s favorite toy”) who set out smashing the walls of this faux reality.

“The location of each ‘subjective reality’ was determined by the type of character we wanted to explore. In this story, reality has become unmoored, and an individual’s beliefs reshape the world around them,” Arnold Said. “The book doesn’t always explain what the ‘dreamer’ is going through, but by taking in each of these worlds, our heroes (and the reader) will attempt able to understand the mind of the person who created it. But their real task will be convincing that person to leave the dream behind.
Mutti added, “A gripping and visually superb story! The characters really seem to move through the pages with sympathy, humanity and courage! A journey within a journey, with fantastic authors (whom I thank!) always enthusiastic and with a beautiful sense of wonder!”
“Andrea Mutti’s work on STAR WARS comics has always been a revelation, but I personally loved being horrified by his work on the indie comic BUNNY MASK,” Wyatt said. “An Italian artist trained in Brescia, he did his early work in Eurocomics, and you get that feel in his line work. His design for the station feels clean but with the detail of a scientific illustration.”
