‘Reginald the Vampire’ season 2 episode 6 review: Trials, magic, and heartache

Reginald the Vampire visits an old, powerful friend.

Previously on Reginald the Vampire, the crew’s attempt to find powerful allies to take on Bolestro did not go exactly as planned. With the clock ticking before their enemy’s return, Reginald, Maurice, and Sarah hit the road hoping they have better luck with their next recruitment target.

Things take an interesting turn as the series brings Abraham, the time manipulating vampire, back into the fold. As happened before, the trio face a series of tests and riddles to prove their worthiness to meet Abraham. We receive further world building with another supernatural being, and some big answers to Reginald the Vampire’s biggest questions this season. At the same time, it teases more mysteries to be explored.

One aspect that falls a little flat are the tests to Maurice and Sarah. They have visions of a possible future if they were not entangled in the current vampire and angel war. Though it’s a little funny seeing what may have been, a real test would place its taker in a tough decision. However, in both cases, the alternative is not really enticing so you never believe neither Maurice or Sara would ever fail.

Abraham isn’t the only powerful vampire from the past to appear on “Blood, Sweat, and Glitter.” Isis, the assessor from Reginald’s vampire trial shows up, after being name checked last week. Ayisha Issa and Savannah Basely, who plays Angela, have good chemistry together. Their characters’ interactions deliver the mix of tones that makes Reginald the Vampire so much fun. One second, they are embroiled in some dark and horror elements, but the next, they hold an impromptu victory dance party like two bosses. Issa and Basely manage the balance of the extremes well resulting in campy but entertaining scenes.

Elsewhere, Todd and Mike’s relationship hits some speed bumps. It’s actually refreshing to see their romance slow down and become more grounded considering how full throttle the two have been when they were randomly paired together with no build. Especially, because it seemed one dimensional, with the main thing keeping them together is Todd’s desire to be a vampire. The show manages to incorporate Uriel’s crisis of faith leading to heartbreak. Despite the ending, there is a glimmer of hope and intrigue.

“Blood, Sweat, and Glitter” is an improvement from the most recent episodes with three compelling and amusing plots that all contribute to the overall narrative.

New episodes of Reginald the Vampire air Wednesdays on Syfy.
