‘My Adventures With Superman’ #2 puts its own spin on another Superman villain

Just as great as the actual show.

The debut issue of My Adventures With Superman was just as great as the actual show, and I’m happy to report that the second issue continues that trend. Following the apprehension of the android known as Amazo, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen resolve to free him. Their plan: enter the military base under the guise of doing a report, and see if they can find Amazo. The only issue is that the base is equipped with anti-Kryptonian weaponry, including a field that dampens Clark’s powers. On top of that, Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke is at the base, alongside another mercenary: Robert DuBois.

That name might seem familiar to Superman fans, and that’s because DuBois is Bloodsport, aka “The Man With A Thousand Guns”, who nearly put the Man of Steel in the ground. By using Bloodsport, Josie M. Campbell doesn’t just continue to put new spins on DC’s heroes and villains – she also provides a new level of intrigue, as Bloodsport and Deathstroke have…well, bad blood. Campbell also has a lot of fun with the “Clark, Lois, and Jimmy sneak into a military base” plot point; since he can’t be Superman, Clark has to improvise a lot, and Jimmy gets sidebarred in the most hilarious way (Especially if you’ve watched the show and picked up on his habit for conspiracy theories.)

But there’s also some strong emotional moments too. When Clark finds Amazo, he gets into the middle of a fight between the android, Deathstroke and Bloodsport, potentially risking his secret identity to remind Amazo that he can make his own choices. It’s a moment that’s absolutely perfect for a Superman comic. Campbell and the rest of the My Adventures With Superman writing room have proven that they understand what makes Superman so special, and I’m happy that it translates to this comic.

You know what else translates well from screen to page? The crazy fight scenes, courtesy of Pablo M. Collar. Deathstroke and Bloodsport match each other blow for blow, sword for gun, and it’s extremely exciting to watch. Collar also keeps the anime-inspired influences intact, including a hilarious moment where Jimmy and Lois hi five in the background while Clark lets out an exasperated sigh. I also love that Collar has made Bloodspoort look similar to his appearance in The Suicide Squad, including his Kamen Rider-esque skull helmet. Add in some rich color art from Nick Filardi, and you’ve got a very beautiful comic.

My Adventures With Superman #2 not only has moments that are pure Superman, but it also puts its unique spin on yet another DC supervillain. My one hope is that we get another miniseries in-between Seasons 2 and 3…and that Bloodsport appears on the show in some form.
