‘Batman and Robin’ #11 travels to Dinosaur Island

A new adventure to mend an old wound.

Batman and Robin #11 begins with a sprawling action sequence that could only happen in a comic book. Making an entrance as the new artist in the series, Juan Ferreyra renders the page in great detail, washed with tropical colors. The first couple of pages set the tone for the entire issue: Bane wrestles a T-Rex. It screams, first and foremost, this is a fun book. There is intrigue in Bane’s motives and the anticipation of his meeting with our dynamic duo. Five years after Alfred’s death by his hands, the tension is still fresh. After his false appearance in Task Force Z and James Tynion’s Joker, we’ll finally get an answer to what Bane has been doing after Alfred’s murder. We’ll see if the resolution of this conflict ends with a bang or limps like the previous arc.

As the beginning of a new arc, this issue succeeds in reeling readers in with excitement, action, and great character drama. The emotional core of this story is Damian’s trauma. He watched Bane break Alfred’s neck right in front of him all those years ago in Tom King’s City of Bane, and seeing Bane again after so long reignites the pain and guilt. It is gripping to witness whether Bane will get what’s coming to him, or if Robin can rein in his bloodlust and maintain his years of growth. Years of development could go down the drain in a second, all depends on how his father treats him, and how Robin deals with his rage for Bane, but most importantly, for himself.

The reunion with Maya and Goliath is a great sight to see, it makes Damian’s family whole, despite the Alfred-shaped hole in his life. Here, Batman acts as the steadfast father figure, another welcome inclusion, seeing that he has lost his authority in the other two books he leads, being mentally broken and spiritually in pieces in both his main titles. It is refreshing seeing Batman be the one who has his act figured out and is capable enough to mentor someone in this story.

As Bruce also lost his father figure to Bane, it is compelling to see how his years of training have changed the way he deals with anger and grief, not losing himself to it as he did when he was just a kid. This contrast to Damian’s shock and ill-preparedness to deal with the death creates an interesting pickle for Batman and Robin. In the next couple of issues, Bruce has to step up and take the role of Alfred to Damian, be the guiding hand and firm shoulder to be relied on, so the obsessive anger that Bruce felt toward Joe Chill does not have to be repeated all over again with Bane. More than fighting dinosaurs, Batman and Robin have to learn to share their recurring grief over the loss of Alfred, the father figure of them both, and work through it together.

Batman and Robin #11 is an amazing beginning to a new arc. An arc that has dinosaurs, a fight with T-Rexes, and the return of a fan-favorite villain in Bane. It’s also not without its mysteries, with how Bane is seemingly back as a pseudo-anti-hero as opposed to the capital V villain he has been previously. Oh, and also don’t forget the dinosaurs.
