Ram V’s epic Detective Comics run is coming to a close starting this week with Detective Comics #1088. It’s a story that saw Batman die and return to Gotham, and now he’s taking back his city. “Gotham Nocturen: Act III Finale” part 1 feels like a true epic, with multiple characters and a team-up between Batman, allies, and even enemies. The Orgham family needs to be swashed, but is it even possible?
Detective Comics #1088 opens with a maniac broadcasting to Gotham’s residents, and she’s completely mad. While Nightwing and Azrael get an edge on the Orgham’s, their public persona is taking a hit. The other shoe has dropped, it appears, and the once not-so-fair fight is leaning towards Batman and giving him the edge.
One of the more intriguing scenes involves the Ten-Eyed Man, who is working with Batman to get information. The scene is rendered in a way that’s very creepy and surreal. Guillem March utilizes white space well here, like something out of the Looney Tunes. March excels at dynamic art, from Batman kicking the butt of goons to Two-Face popping a few more bullets into a werewolf. No matter what, March makes the book feel impactful.
As far as the story goes, this issue continues with the table setting for a final showdown. It’s nice to see heroes actually winning, though it feels like some of these battles took place over multiple issues rather than single scenes. Still, the satisfying parts are taking place here. That includes a major twist as far as the main villain, who changes their look in a way you won’t see coming.
This issue also contains a backup by Dan Watters and Christopher Mitten titled “Golden Child.” It involves Talia al Ghul resurrecting a key character who will likely play a part in the finale of this series or, at the very least, pop up again. Watters does a good job getting inside Talia’s head, right down to the final two captions, which poetically wrap up her feelings about the character being brought back. MItten’s art style plays into the weirdness of the Lazarus pits and their abilities.
Resolutions in fight scenes take center stage in Detective Comics #1088, which builds towards a final showdown in Ram V’s epic run. There are many satisfying moments as heroes get their wins, and the weird comes out to play.
