Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we shout out the very best comics of the week! This week was an Image Comics takeover as the publisher grabbed three spots in our top five. Let’s take a look at the books!

The best comics of the books of September 18, 2024

#5: The Power Fantasy #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 18, 2024

The Power Fantasy #2 continues to deal with super-powered people in a purposeful and thought-provoking way. These characters aren’t blasting holes through walls but talking, yet the tension is greater than most fight comics. The Power Fantasy manages to handle superpowers in an accessible, pulpy way, making you think while not detracting from the gravity of the material.

#4: The Tin Can Society #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 18, 2024

What really stands out about The Tin Can Society is how down to earth it feels, despite the presence of super-enhanced electromagnetics and a suit of armor that puts Iron Man’s to shame. It’s about the people first and foremost; how they deal with grief over a friend’s death, and the reality that one of them could be the reason why he’s dead. That’s what makes a great comic – it doesn’t matter if you have the top creative team or a killer premise, it’s the characters that keep readers coming back. The Tin Can Society has that in spades.

#3: The Masked Macher #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 18, 2024

Overall, The Masked Macher #1 is a strong debut. It delivers plenty of laughs while following Tony Hollywood’s chaotic journey toward fame. Watching Tony—a man obsessed with the spotlight—take on a masked persona adds an intriguing layer. If I can put on my casting cap for a second, if this ever became a film or TV show, Will Ferrell or Bruce Campbell would be great for the role of Tony Hollywood. This comic is a must-read for wrestling fans or anyone who’s ever chased an unlikely dream.

#2: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #31

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 18, 2024

Overall, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #31 is a strong return to form and plays off of Waid’s past work to help set up an exciting future for this series whether its for Justice League Unlimted, JSA, or simply World’s Finest.

#1: The Moon is Following Us #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 18, 2024

A great comic often has amazing art, stellar scripting, a unique premise, or a top notch creative team. The Moon is Following Us #1 has all of the above. It’s two creators at the top of their games, delivering a story with human weight in a fantastic setting and delivering an ending that no one saw coming. That’s great comics in my book.
