Begin your October with our Channel Surfing TV picks. Watch the transformation of a regular housewife into a mastermind criminal in Joan. Teens battle aliens and ghosts in Dan Da Dan. Then, watch all the behind the scenes drama of making a superhero film in The Franchise

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

Joan Hannington was one of Britain’s most notorious jewel thieves. She wrote about her journey rising through the ranks in crime. Her story serves as the inspiration for a new series called Joan

Joan finds an opportunity to reinvent herself when her criminal husband goes on the run leaving her and their daughter behind. Hoping to earn a living for her remaining family, She starts off with petty crime, but works her way up to a master diamond thief who would gain the moniker of “the Godmother.” Sophie Turner stars in the Anna Symon created show.

Joan premieres Wednesday, October 2, on The CW.

Supernatural Threats That Are Out of This World

Dan Da Dan is a popular manga series from writer and artist, Yukinobu Tatsu. It is now receiving an anime adaptation produced by Japanese animation studio, Science Saru.

The story finds two teens brought together by their beliefs. Momo Ayase believes in ghosts but not aliens, while her classmate, Ken Takakura, believes in aliens but not ghosts. Through circumstance, each experience awakened powers which they use to battle both aliens and ghosts. And, maybe amongst all that fighting, sparks begin to fly between Momo and Ken.

Dan Da Dan launches Thursday, October 3, on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu.

How the Sausage Gets Made

Have you ever wondered how superhero films like the ones from the MCU and DCU get made? The new show, The Franchise, has an idea. It takes a comedic look behind the scenes with all the dysfunction that ensues. Hopefully, that won’t affect the on-screen product.

The Franchise comes from John Brown, who serves as creator and showrunner, Sam Mendes, who directed the pilot, and Armando Iannucci. All three also serve as executive producers. Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, and Isaac Powell star. Recurring guest stars include Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl, who have their own experience with superheroes.

The series premiere of The Franchise airs Sunday, October 6, on HBO.
