The trapped townsfolk in From are not the only characters who are going around in circles in the latest episode entitled “Mouse Trap.” The show that has given us the famous lamp globe (globe lamp?) finally hit a snag in its otherwise strong third season.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Hope fades along with the food Jim found last week as Jim talks to his dead son on a phone not attached to anything. Soon, though, that same voice won’t be taunting Jim but helping him reunite with Tabitha. Those gripping events take place after Tabitha finds that Henry has a tree in his backyard similar to Victor’s Bottle Tree (sans power). A refresher course is held between Boyd and Ellis Stevens as they discuss their plan to trap one of the monsters. Last year’s finale put Boyd through hell and Ellis understandably has reservations about his father going out looking for a second round.
Next on the list of things Ellis has to worry about is Fatima’s pregnancy hankerings for decomposing vegetables, which seems a lot worse than a case of pica. The reasons for these cravings are unknown for now, but I appreciate the show doing a storyline based around a pregnancy. From is another example of the horror genre being arguably the only genre attempting to process what is going on right now surrounding the politicizing of a woman’s autonomy, which is one reason I am a horror fan.

A particular “kooky” old lady, Tillie, comes to Fatima’s aid but is rebuffed initially. Tillie’s “blah blah” about tarot cards is only slightly less annoying than Jade Herrera’s own unhinged attitude as he obsesses over the town’s mysteries. That means, for once, I actually agree with Dale when he blames Jade for Kristi Miller getting caught in a bear trap when he tries to abandon their harvesting mission.
Communication is a common problem in this episode as Tabitha starts to question whether to trust Henry. From needs to bring Tabitha back into town because no one is listening to poor Ethan (who is giving The American’s Henry a run for being TV’s most latchkey kid).
This place these characters are trapped in makes Tillie’s tarot cards seem like a perfectly reasonable response to prenatal concerns. It’s perfectly reasonable, as well, to see a hallucination of a one eyed man drinking blood from a skull…as Jade did as he helped Kenny and Dale bring Kristi to shelter in the episode’s final moments. These moments make Boyd’s decision to form an alliance with Randall seem like a brilliant strategy.
Never have I seen so many coincidences pile up as fast as Tabitha finding the bracelet she made Jim in Henry’s glove box, on top of them sharing a favorite song with Henry and his wife. The aggressive talk she and Henry have about this while he drives inevitably leads to a crash. In the episode’s closing moments, Tabitha and Henry find themselves in an ambulance that inevitably winds up in front of a familiar fallen tree…
Important things are just off in the not-so distant future in “Mouse Trap”, leaving the characters spinning their wheels (or tarot cards).
