How do you usually spend your birthday? Is it with family? Close friends? Doing something nice for yourself? It probably didn’t involve speaking to a packed stage at a comic convention, but that’s how Amy Jo Johnson spent part of her birthday. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers alum took to LA Comic Con’s main stage on Sunday with moderator Mackenzie Green to discuss her various artistic endeavors.
Chief among them was music. Johnson revealed that her newest single “Still Here” was available to listen to, diving into how she wrote the song in a tough time. “Music is sort of a cathartic hobby to me,” she said. Johnson also directs, having helmed an episode of Superman & Lois, and is a writer – in addition to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return, she told the audience she was working on two screenplays. “I think I get bored easily,” she laughed.
Eventually, talk turned to Power Rangers, as Johnson said that it was “crazy” meeting fans who grew up with the show and told her how much Kimberly Hart meant to them. “I feel very lucky.” When an audience member asked her what character she would have played other than Kimberly, she immediately said “Billy!” Johnson even listed the MMPR episodes “Switching Places” and “Power Punks”, which feature Billy and Kimberly heavily, as her favorites.
The panel closed with a surprise appearance from Johnson’s boyfriend Matt Hotson, who surprised her with a cake, and the entire audience singing “Happy Birthday” to her. Though Johnson appeared at previous LA Comic Cons, this panel was both impromptu birthday celebration and a reminder of how her work’s impacted fans.
“Still Here” is available to stream on music platforms. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return is available wherever comics are sold.
