‘Into the Unbeing Part 2’ #1 makes an early case for best horror of 2025

A masterclass in unease.

There’s really nothing like Into the Unbeing in the comics realm, which kicks off Part 2 on February 12, 2025. The series consistently blew me away with its body horror, strong premise, eco-terror, and striking visuals by Hayden Sherman. As my favorite horror series of 2024, I just had to dive in and give you a heads up on Part 2 in this advance review: It’s really freaking good.

Into the Unbeing Part 2 #1 is surprisingly new-reader friendly, but reading Part 1 is a must from an entertainment standpoint. The second part opens with a new perspective as an adventurer attempts to find the giant humanoid in the jungle. Right off the bat, the captions, lettered in a notebook style by Jim Campbell, draw you into the madness of an adventurer. The first half of this issue feels like a sci-fi Heart of Darkness in the best of ways.

As the adventurer treks into the jungle with his son and two compatriots, Sherman draws you into the body horror via clever visuals like a root that borders a gutter and a panel of a mosquito-bitten neck. It’s not the first time you’ll feel the hairs on your neck stand on end. It’s as if the jungle and Earth below their feet are alive as one being, similar to the situation the characters are in in Part 1.

The visuals continue to back up the themes, masterfully drawing your eye, be it the framing of a snake or the symmetry of the layouts.  Multiple notebook pages draw you further into the adventurer’s mind and situation. Writer Zac Thompson does a great job, with each falling further into madness, which eventually surprisingly connects to the present day.

This issue also cleverly reveals a truth about the interior of the giant humanoid being, which puts the three remaining main characters from Part 1 in a precarious situation. By the end of this issue, you’re left wondering if they’ll make it out alive due to the dangers around them, the befriending of the creature from the last issue’s cliffhanger, and the animosity between the main characters. It’s a building of dangers that makes Part 2 even more perilous and even more intriguing.

If you’re looking for even more alien flora and fauna, Sherman doesn’t disappoint. There are surprises, to be sure, and weird things that may stick with you in your nightmares.

Into the Unbeing is one of the best horror comics around, further proven by Part 2. It blends tension, jaw-dropping visuals, and a deeply unsettling narrative. Part 2 continues to push boundaries mixing terror, human frailty, and environmental dread, this series cements itself as a must-read for horror fans.
