‘All-New Venom’ #2 is an action-heavy ride

‘All-New Venom’ #2 delivers action-packed fun, sharp visuals, and just the right amount of intrigue.

All-New Venom has hit the scene running, complete with a strong first issue and his own column at AIPT. For a character who was once capable of teleporting around the universe, a king of all symbiotes, and prior to that, ate brains, this new version is quite different. Not only is he gold, but he’s quippy with a fun-loving vibe. That continues in All-New Venom #2, out this week.

The issue opens with Venom surrounded by billboards of the main suspects, who could be Venom. Those are Rick Jones, Luke Cage, Madame Masque, and Robbie Robertson. This new Venom is a good guy, as is obvious, since he’s trying to stop supervillain team Death-Throws from stealing bags of cash. The goofy team is well-drawn, and it’s an eclectic bunch with great art by Carlos Gómez.

This leads to quipping from Venom and some new moves we haven’t seen before. We know his new gold look has ties to getting a power boost, but swallowing a bomb and containing the impact was not something I’d think this character could do. Talk about Looney Tunes vibes. This leads to even more fighting all of which looks slick as heck and is well worth the price of admission. The visuals Gómez does with the purple tongue are out of this world.

You won’t be disappointed if fans are looking for more clues about who Venom is. One of the main four suspects is taken off the board, or at least the main detective, Dylan Brock, decides they can’t be Venom. I won’t say who, but Robbie, Luke, and Rick all discuss who Venom could be, as they did last issue, in a fun scene. The fact that a suspect is ruled out so early is a good sign, as the creative team isn’t dragging this out longer than it needs to be.

Meanwhile, the unique dynamic of MJ, Dylan, and Paul continues. Writer Al Ewing plucks at the dynamic between Paul and MJ, with the two fighting a bit and MJ having a good point. The two never got to be parents for long, so it’s interesting to see them trying to be adults in front of a teenage Dylan.

All-New Venom #2 is as action-heavy as it comes, making it a wild and fun ride. From the vibrant art to the intriguing mystery and strong character interactions, this issue builds on the promise of the series while keeping the tone fresh and entertaining. This is a worthy read for fans of Venom who want to try something different and newcomers alike.
