Marvel Comics is entering a new phase of Star Wars comics as the entire line moves into a post-Return of the Jedi era. There are a lot of opportunities for storytelling, but before we get to that, how about the new legacy characters introduced in the comics? In Star Wars: A New Legacy, we check in on the likes of Doctor Aphra, Valance, 0-0-0, and more!
Star Wars: A New Legacy is an anthology special with three tales. The first story is the longest, titled “The Grand Imperial Jubilee” by Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas. The story features Valance, Doctor Aphra, Salla Zend, and Rik Duel scoping out an Empire gallery showing. Lots of valuable art is on display, and Aphra’s on a job to steal just one while scooping up what she can. Meanwhile, Valance needs to nab Aphra on a bounty. You can see how things will get complicated.
Possibly the most interesting bit in this story involves the Mask of Lord Momin, which adds ample chaos, a bit of humor, and a major thorn in the side of all parties. Given the events of the story, as well as the slightly predictable ending, it’s a little too long for its own good. Still, if you love these characters, it’s a fun time.
Following that is a much shorter but still lengthy tale, “For the Love of the Empire,” by Jason Aaron and Leonard Kirk. Aaron drills down into the military-style thinking of this crew, who are hellbent on stopping rebels and believe they’re doing the right thing. This turns from noble to scary as we see they’re willing to kill everyone if it means finishing their mission.
Jason Aaron is back on Star Wars and it’s a good tale.

It’s nice to see Aaron come back with a story about the Scar Squadron, who are hellbent on being good Empire cops, more or less. Kirk is an old hand at Star Wars comics, so it suits the tale, which gets pretty action-heavy.
Wrapping things up is Kieron Gillen and Salva Espin’s “Rogue’s Gambit,” which is a nice, short, and comical tale. Per usual, 0-0-0 wants to murder and is willing to cheat, even at board games. Set prior to Vader Down #1, it’s basically a “lost” tale as the characters are headed to the main mission. Aphra, per usual, can’t control her killer robots and crew, which leads to a nice Darth Vader sighting.
Star Wars: A New Legacy delivers a mix of humor, action, and intrigue with its anthology approach, giving comic book legacy characters their moment to shine. While some stories drag or feel a bit predictable, the collection is a solid celebration of fan-favorite characters, offering a fun bridge into the next phase of Marvel’s Star Wars comics.
