One of the bigger reveals from Severance is the true identity of Ms. Casey. The mystery surrounding the wellness counselor at Lumon drives the actions of outtie Mark this season. In this week’s installment, we are treated to a deeper dive into the character.
“Chikhai Bardo” really makes you admire the careful attention to detail the creators put into the series. There are haunting elements previously introduced that subtly come back into the spotlight. There are even throwaway lines earlier in the episode that play a role later on.
One aspect in particular shows the far reach that Lumon has in Mark and his wife’s life prior to the severance program. There is more than coincidence that both fall onto the company’s radar and that there is a targeted approach, especially for his wife. All these different tie-ins and call backs are satisfying to witness as the pieces slowly come together. In addition, they up the rewatch value as you catch something new each time.
From a technical standpoint, the episode is one of Severance’s finest. The editing and use of close-ups and lighting provide almost seamless transitions from one scene to another. This is important with the many flashbacks and setting jumps that occur. Furthermore, there are clever means to show the passage of time.

The lovely montage of the couple’s relationship through the years is artistically filmed. The lens and filter give off a home movies aura making the bond between Mark and Gemma more intimate. However, despite all the cool camera tricks, it can still be confusing and hard to follow occasionally.
What makes the episode stand out on an emotional level is the brilliant performance from Dichen Lachman. It’s one thing to assume the feelings Mark has for his wife, but it’s another to see it portrayed on screen. Lachman and Adam Scott are like two young kids hopelessly in love and it’s adorable to see them together. With a large focus on innie Mark’s romance, it’s good to finally grasp his outtie’s side.
But it’s not all fun times, and Lachman can make you feel the sadness and heartbreak her character experiences. From the tragedies of trying to conceive to the inevitable feeling of being trapped, you travel on this journey with her. Despite all the lows, Lachman instills a fiery perseverance and strength into Gemma keeping hope alive.
“Chikhai Bardo” is a beautifully filmed episode, both technically and visually, that is anchored by a brilliant performance from Dichen Lachman.
