Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, our look back at the very best comics of the week! This week, Transformers hits a turning point, Amazing Spider-Man begins anew, and more. Let’s get to the books!
Best comics of the week: April 9, 2025
#5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Nightwatcher #7
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Nightwatcher #7 delivers an action-packed, emotional finale to one of the most unique TMNT comics ever published. This might be the end of one story, but I hope it isn’t the end of Jennika’s time in the TMNT universe, especially with that ending.

#4: Phoenix #10
Phoenix #10 ends the series’ first story arc, delivering plenty of emotion and cosmic power along the way. It also cements Phoenix as arguably the best X-Men book on the stands, and a gold standard that the rest of the line will hopefully strive for.

#3: Amazing Spider-Man #1
Amazing Spider-Man #1 delivers a thrilling new start with heart, humor, and high-stakes action. Joe Kelly efficiently reintroduces Peter Parker with a mix of grounded personal stakes and energetic superhero moments, making it easy for new readers to jump in. With dynamic art from Pepe Larraz and John Romita Jr., and a promising new villain in Hellgate, this issue sets the stage for an exciting run.

#2: Transformers #19
Transformers #19 represents a massive turning point for the series. We’re only five issues away from Johnson leaving the book, and he’s giving us a fairly massive and bold idea to chew on with this Matrix of Slavery concept. If done well, we could be seeing the birth of a new franchise staple, or perhaps another failed attempt to create a darker parallel to the iconic Autobot equivalent. Time will tell, but I think at the very least, it’s going to be an exciting new development to follow.
#1: Absolute Batman #7
Absolute Batman #7 continues to enchant with gorgeous art and tightly paced intrigue. It sets up an all-new Mr. Freeze with a moody backstory and chilling design. This time around, a new team on art stops by with equally extraordinary talent, deliberate in paneling and colors but never too cold for comfort. This is the type of collaboration that comics are made for.
