The challenges on this week’s Top Chef had a little bit more playfulness than usual. However, that didn’t make the competition any less stressful. As the number of contestants continues to dwindle, the higher the stakes.
When the chefs entered the kitchen for the quickfire, they were greeted with a number of dirty pots and pans. Dishwasher detergent Finish Ultimate determined the ten toughest stains in America to clean and each competitor selected a dish based on visual inspection. They were then tasked with creating a new dish in 30 minutes featuring whatever ingredient caused the stain. Top Chef Canada host Eden Grinshpan served as guest judge and helped select the winner for the $10,000 prize.
For the first time ever, Top Chef held a pizza party. Since Canada is the birthplace of the highly divisive Hawaiian Pizza, the contestants needed to create a pizza that pushed the limits and sparked conversation all while still being delicious. They only had a budget of $250 to serve the judges and 70 other diners. The stakes were particularly high for the elimination challenge since it would be the last time immunity would be up for grabs. James Beard Award Winner Wylie Dufresne and ex-contestant Spike Mendelsohn served as guest judges.
Last Chance Kitchen gave the two chefs a “dough over.” It was a fairly straight forward challenge to create a dish under 30 minutes that featured a freshly baked dough. That short time span wasn’t enough to make the dough properly rise so they had to be creative on how they utilized the ingredient.
