‘BOOM! 20th Anniversary Special’ (FCBD 2025) review

Boom! Studios offers a free sample of its best comics from its best creators.

Free Comic Book Day 2025 is here, and among the free offerings is BOOM! 20th Anniversary Special (FCBD 2025). As the title suggests, BOOM! Studios will be 20 years old this year, having been founded on June 1, 2005. In that time frame, BOOM! Studios has built a rich library of comics from drama to horror to fantasy, from both acclaimed creators and even new and aspiring creators.

To celebrate this rich history, BOOM! 20th Anniversary Special (FCBD 2025) has samples of four of its most well-known works, as well as stories from high-profile creators. Among the collection of stories is BRZRKR by Hollywood star Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt, with artwork from Ron Garney.

Also featured in the sampler is Irredeemable by comic book veteran Mark Waid, with artwork from Peter Krause.

Fans of Ram V (of Detective Comics and Catwoman fame) are also treated to a sample of his creator-owned comic, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, complete with artwork from Filipe Andrade. BOOM! Studios also has a treat for fantasy fans in the form of Mouse Guard by Peter Davison, which depicts a world entirely populated by animals, with mice as the protagonists. Fans of Tini Howard (also of Catwoman fame) can also get a sneak peek at her creator-owned story, Hello Darkness, with collaborator, Chloe Brailsford.

In addition to showcasing the different genres of comics that BOOM! Studios publishes, the BOOM! 20th Anniversary Special (FCBD 2025) also celebrates the diversity of voices in the comic book industry, which is reflected not only at the script level but also in the artwork. In doing so, BOOM! Studios shows that it doesn’t subscribe to only one point of view and equally embraces more than one art style.

Unfortunately, potential BOOM! Readers are only treated to no more than 2-3 pages of previews for each story, which can make it difficult to get a good sense of what each story is about. Still, even with that major shortcoming, potential readers still get a good sample of the quality of the work BOOM! Studios produces, which does a fine enough job at pointing readers in the right direction for which comics to buy at the comic shop on FCBD.
