IDW and Mattel resurrect Street Sharks in new series for Fall 2025

‘STREET SHARKS’ #1 reintroduces readers to the Bolton brothers—four half-man, half-shark siblings on a mission to keep their city safe.

Get ready to dive back into the deep end—Street Sharks is returning in comic book form for the first time in over two decades. Mattel, Inc., the global toy powerhouse behind some of the world’s most recognizable franchises, has teamed up once again with publisher IDW to revive the cult-classic ’90s heroes in a brand-new series hitting comic shops in September 2025.

The upcoming five-issue miniseries, STREET SHARKS #1, reintroduces readers to the Bolton brothers—four half-man, half-shark siblings on a mission to keep their city safe. Originally surfacing in 1994 as an animated series and toy line, Street Sharks quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon, with its outlandish villains, outrageous action, and toothy charm.

Spearheaded by writer Stephanie Williams (Nubia and the Amazons) and artist Ariel Medel (TMNT vs. Street Fighter), the new comic promises an explosive blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling. Set in the chaotic streets of Fission City, the Sharks face off against twisted experiments gone wrong—including muscle-bound mutant lobsters, ruthless squids, and deranged scientists who turn themselves into terrifying piranha hybrids. Expect wild motorcycle chases, burger-fueled brawls, and plenty of over-the-top mayhem as Ripster, Jab, Streex, and Big Slammu fight to protect their home.

Cover art by Philip Murphy (Cover A) and Elizabeth Beals (Cover C) will headline the launch.

Street Sharks has remained a fan-favorite for over 30 years, and fans have been eager for more stories featuring the fearless Bolton brothers,” said Ryan Ferguson, Global Head of Publishing at Mattel. “We’re excited to explore new depths of this world with IDW and bring these jaw-some characters back to life in comic book form.”

David Jonas, CEO of IDW Media Holdings, echoed the enthusiasm: “Our renewed partnership with Mattel highlights what makes collaborations like this work—shared vision and creative alignment. We’re thrilled to be the ones expanding the Street Sharks legacy in this exciting new direction.”

Series editor Nicolas Niño added, “The Street Sharks were pure ’90s adrenaline, and that energy translates perfectly to the comic page. Stephanie and Ariel are crafting a story that honors everything fans loved about the original while also offering a fresh take that new readers can latch onto.”
