‘Resident Alien’ season 4 episode 4 review: Love, laughs, heartbreak, and chills.

Harry finds himself in an awkward position on Resident Alien. His former flame Heather the Avian arrives in Patience bringing with her a big surprise. Though the couple try to rekindle their relationship, Harry struggles with not being the alien that Heather fell for previously.

“Truth Hurts” reminds us how cute and entertaining Heather and Harry are together. Edi Patterson pairs perfectly with Alan Tudyk. She matches his off the wall craziness in a way where they complement each other. The two have great chemistry together demonstrated by their final scene. Though the over the top and seemingly improvised ramblings are played for comedy, their reactions still convey so much emotion and sadness. Such a bittersweet and memorable moment.

Despite the silliness, Resident Alien continues to explore Harry’s humanity in interesting ways. Now that he is one, it’s understandable that his tastes have changed. He no longer has the same interests and attractions as before. But more so, his empathy and self sacrifice has grown. It’s unfair to Heather to be this version of himself considering he is so different from the one that she loved.

Heather and Harry aren’t the only couple that Resident Alien spotlights. Sheriff Mike Thompson has some communication issues with his girlfriend. For someone who is so guarded and no nonsense, it’s sweet to see the sheriff open up and show his softer side. Incorporating his new believer status adds another layer of complexity. It’s difficult to walk that tight rope of expressing concern for the safety of a significant other when the threat is a man eating praying mantis-like creature. Mike is able to pull it off, at least on the second try.

The subplot with the Hawthornes has mixed results. The episode spends the cold opening trying to remind us how close Ben and D’arcy were. That closeness fuels the tension as the latter struggles knowing where the former’s baby is. Though he is a desperate man searching for the truth, Ben crosses the line a bit with his admission during their confrontation, especially since the series has been portraying a united Hawthorne front while looking for their missing child.

Resident Alien ends on a more chilling note. As gung ho Kate has been with her training and determination to find her baby, the Greys know how to put her in her place. It’s an unexpected turn made more disturbing with the use of children. The darker closing makes for a more intriguing cliffhanger.

The couples of “Truth Hurts” take center stage providing love, laughs, heartbreak, and chills.

New episodes of Resident Alien air Fridays on Syfy and USA.
