‘Paper Girls’ gets a bold new format with stylish “Backpack Editions”

The Backpack Editions join a range of other Paper Girls formats available in hardcover, paperback, and digital, including The Complete Story Compendium, deluxe hardcovers, and more.

The Eisner-winning hit Paper Girls is getting a fresh look, and a more portable one, with the upcoming release of Backpack Editions. This beloved time-travel adventure from Saga writer Brian K. Vaughan and Catwoman: Lonely City artist Cliff Chiang will be re-released in compact 6×9″ softcovers, perfect for tossing in your bag and heading out on your next nostalgic journey.

These new editions will feature brand-new cover art by Chiang and are aimed at both longtime fans and first-time readers. Volume One collects issues #1–10 and lands in comic shops on Wednesday, October 29, followed by a wide bookstore release on Tuesday, November 11. Volume Two is set for release in 2026.

“I remain so proud of what my friends and I did with this series,” said Vaughan. “These gorgeous Backpack editions are a great way to introduce this emotional young adult adventure to your loved ones—or rediscover new details from our twisty time-travel tale.”

Paper Girls follows four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls—Erin, KJ, Mac, and Tiffany—whose Halloween night in 1988 becomes the starting point of a reality-bending mystery. Think Stand By Me meets Lost, packed with ‘80s vibes, coming-of-age heart, and high-stakes time travel. The series was adapted for television by Amazon Prime and starred Ali Wong.

Fans attending San Diego Comic-Con can catch Vaughan at his spotlight panel on Saturday, July 26, from 10–11 a.m. in Room 28DE, where he’ll talk about Paper Girls, Saga, and his upcoming graphic novel Spectators with Niko Henrichon. He’ll also be signing at Image Comics’ booth (#1915).

The Backpack Editions join a range of other Paper Girls formats available in hardcover, paperback, and digital, including The Complete Story Compendium, deluxe hardcovers, and more, at comic shops, major booksellers, and digital platforms everywhere.

Smaller is definitely better, it seems, as DC Comics has also gone into the compact format of late.
