[Fantasia ’25] ‘I Am Frankelda’: Mexico’s first stop motion feature is a treat

The one true Royal Nightmarer.

I Am Frankelda is a stop motion animated film from Mexico making its North American premiere at Fantasia. Francisca has just lost her mother and turns to the fantasy horror stories she has written for solace. Those words are the link between the reality of the 19th century Mexico she resides in and a world of nightmares.. When the Spooks of that mystical land threaten to destroy the real world, Francisca and her new friend Herneval must find a way to save everyone.

Animation has gone through many changes over the decades. Characters look more life-like, movements look more realistic, and the backgrounds are detailed. Stop motion has remained relatively the same, however. The artistry and distinct look that are unique to the genre have remained essentially the same.

I Am Frankelda is the latest example. Its beautiful story is told against a series of fantastic backdrops. The mesmerizing settings are haunting, frightening, and breathtaking. There is a beauty to it all that draws audiences in. What makes it more impressive is the action never stays in one place for too long. I Am Frankelda moves from a castle throne room to personal studies filled with books to dark caves over the course of nearly two hours. It is a visual delight.

[Fantasia '25] 'I Am Frankelda': Mexico's first stop motion feature is a treat

As delightful as it is to look at, it is the story of I Am Frankelda that is the real draw. It is classic fairy tale storytelling about finding inner strength and power that translates perfectly into the modern world. Francisa’s transformation into the title character is great to watch – especially for aspiring writers. Herneval becomes a strong and flawed leader as things progress and will win audiences over.

Nowadays, it seems like most animated releases are emotional manipulative works that have nothing meaningful to say. They try, but it often comes off as being forced and flat. The creators forget that often animated films are about transporting people to a different world. I Am Frankelda succeeds in a magnificent tale that audiences of any age will enjoy.

The Fantasia Film Festival takes place from July 16, 2025 through August 3, 2025
