Animale is a methodical horror movie that explores gender roles and independence. Nejma (Oulaya Amamra) is the lone female bullfighter in a small town. (The movie depicts a modernized version of the sport that is not about killing the animals.) After a night of partying with her fellow bullfighters, she begins to have trouble sleeping. She begins to worry that her condition may be connected to a series of mysterious deaths.
Those expecting a straight up horror movie will find themselves disappointed. While there are some tropes that are found in similar films, Animale is much more about its characters. The movie explores Nejman as she is in just about every scene. We see how she lives her life and get an idea of the passion she has for the animals she spends the majority of her time with. There is never a moment when she is away from the ranch or the people who are part of that life. It is the rare case where the narrow focus of the character adds depth.
Animale is an atmospheric watch. The more dreamlike (or in some cases, nightmarish) moments are the highlight. It is in these scenes that things are most tense and the characters most interesting. The setting is perfect for the story being told and the scenes of Nejman preparing for her first bullfight look really good.
The more exposition laden moments are important for character development. While there is not much depth to the other fighters, Nejman’s interactions with them showcase just how difficult her life is. She has done more than just enter a dangerous sport. She has become part of a male dominated profession.
The twist will be the most confusing part of the Animale for many. It is a powerful moment and leads to some of the most impactful imagery of the film. The reveal itself is treated well, but everything after feels rushed. It is not given time to settle with the audience. But it does not feel underserved either. Maybe that is what director Emma Benestan is aiming for. An emotional gut punch that does not overshadow the victim.
Animale premieres on VOD/Digital August 8.
